BIOGRAPHY
IRENE VICENTE SALAS
I am a director, playwright and performing artist. My work sits at the intersection of body, representation and art history, and takes shape in performance, live-art and writing projects. I have developed and presented my work in contexts such as the GREC Festival in Barcelona, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Museu Marès in Barcelona, the TNT Festival in Terrassa, the Antic Teatre and the Sismògraf Festival in Olot, among others.
I trained as an art historian, specialising in the history of the performing arts, at the UB (Barcelona) and at La Sapienza (Rome), and later as a director and playwright at the Institut del Teatre (Barcelona and Vic). I also completed two postgraduate courses: Production and Management of Shows and Cultural Events at IL3 (UB) and Theatre and Education at the Institut del Teatre in Vic.
My practice as a performance-maker sits at the intersection of art history, the body and contemporary performance. My work begins with a re-examination of bodily imaginaries and stereotypes, from their earliest artistic representations to the present day, and takes shape in pieces with a strong visual, compositional and choreographic component.
This line includes Unheimlich, a piece supported by the Kinètic programme of CC Parc Sandaru and by DespertaLab at Nau Ivanow and Sala Atrium, presented at Sala Atrium, at the TNT Festival 2019 and at Casa Elizalde;
Autònoma, premiered at Antic Teatre and at Can Felipa (2017);
Ellas comen, developed during a residency at Teatropuerto (La Serena, Chile) as part of Nau Ivanow; and Corpus, a performative exhibition conceived for museums and adapted to each collection. Corpus has been presented at the Museu Marès and at the MNAC as part of the Grec festival in 2022 and 2023, and at the Museu de la Garrotxa in Olot as part of Sismògraf 2024.
My most recent piece is Oasi, presented at the Grec Festival 2025 in co-production between the festival, the Centre d’Arts Santa Mònica and the Centre de les arts lliures de Barcelona.
I have worked as dramaturg on the productions Macho Man (Temporada Alta Festival, Teatros del Canal, GREC Festival Barcelona), Un dia de Novembre deixo rastres de bellesa sobre blanc (Festival Els Clàssics + MNAC), Aquest país no descobert que no deixa tornar de les seves fronteres cap dels seus viatgers (Temporada Alta Festival), and Ofèlia (Panic Attack), (Temporada Alta Festival, GREC Festival Barcelona) by Àlex Rigola.
I have also worked as dramaturg on No puc arrencar-me el cap by Alba Pujol, presented at Escenes 2021 at L’Auditori de Barcelona; on Pop by Laura Alcalà, with the dance company La Súbita; as dramaturg and outside eye on Morir lo hace todo el mundo by José y sus Hermanas (Teatre Lliure, GREC Festival Barcelona), on FOC I LLOC by Emma Riba (Fira Tàrrega), as dramaturg on Els Objectes flotants, by La Conquesta del Pol Sud (Teatre Akadèmia) and on NATAL by Animal Religion (Barcelona City Council, Christmas Festival).
I was producer and manager of Àlex Rigola‘s company for five years, between 2018 and 2023, combining this work with my dramaturgical and performance practice. Since 2023, I have produced for the documentary theatre company La Conquesta del Pol Sud.
I have worked as assistant director to Lali Álvarez on Ragazzo and Barcelona, contra la paret, presented at Nau Ivanow, Teatre Lliure, Fira Tàrrega and Antic Teatre. I have also worked with Evelyn Arévalo on La suma i la resta (Sala Fènix).
Outside of my performance practice, I have coordinated and led nudist guided tours of the Museu Arqueològic de Barcelona, held at the start of the 23/24 season. I have also curated the performance strand of the contemporary art festival EX ABRUPTO in Moià.
I have also written commissioned articles and texts for various projects, including Sota terra, a la recerca d’un temps tel·lúric, d’un espai atàvic, for the Xarxa Transversal, based on the show Sota terra by Moon Ribas and Quim Girón, and Visita a els bronzes de Riace: connectar amb la història a través del propi cos, for the magazine of the Club Naturista de Catalunya.
